Silvera for Seniors is breaking the stereotype of seniors’ housing with an active living community in southwest Calgary, aimed at putting independence and stress-free living back into residents’ hands.

The 92-suite full-service Westview Town Suites in the popular community of Glamorgan is being hailed for its innovative approach to providing housing for older adults, while offering providing services and programs that enable them to grow.

“We believe that just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop,” says Carrie Larose, senior manager of mixed market housing with Silvera for Seniors. “Rather, it’s an opportunity to discover the things you didn’t have time for before – to learn and develop and enjoy life.”

To that end, Westview Town Suites has incorporated a unique learning centre and creative space in a four-season, main-floor atrium designed for everyone from scholars to athletes to artists. In addition, Silvera’s Life, Learning and Leisure program has spawned a series of initiatives, from a recent modified triathlon and regular concerts to an upcoming senior-led film festival and historical art installation.

“We really are trying to elevate adult activities and events, and opportunities to learn and explore in life,” says Larose.

Silvera has also gone out of its way at Westview Town Suites to provide a full suite of services while still allowing residents to enjoy their independence. Its well-priced and fully renovated bachelor studios and one-and two-bedroom suites include meals and weekly housekeeping, allowing residents to enjoy a stress-free lifestyle. They also have access to 24/7 on-site staff, as well as an on-site salon, corner store and paramedical services.

Meanwhile, residents who want to stretch their legs can take advantage of free transportation to nearby shopping in the Westhills retail district, attend events at Grey Eagle Casino and Mount Royal University or have an outing at North Glenmore Park.

“Many of the older adults who come to Westview Town Suites are always impressed by the options for activities and opportunities to make social connections,” says Larose.

Bev Yuill, who worked for Silvera (previously MCF) for 15 years before becoming a full-time resident, remembers when Westview Town Suites was first being built.

“I said to my daughter, ‘I think that’s where I want to be,’ ” says Yuill. “And she said, ‘I wouldn’t mind moving in there.’ ”

Yuill says Westview is the perfect fit for her, highlighting the food and many different options to be social within the community as her favourites.

“One of the best is the happy hour twice a week, which I really enjoy because we have a chance to sit around and talk and just play silly games,” she says. “It’s great. It’s being normal. That’s what the community is.”
