A Canadian university cancels intramural hockey in the name of ‘equity’

.

Hockey is canceled — at least at Mount Royal University in Canada.

The university has shut down ice hockey intramurals for the coming semester, declaring it is committed to “equity, diversity, and inclusion” and that the university must have “safe services” that “welcome all individuals.” An announcement on the university’s website said that among the many factors considered in this decision were a “sense of belonging” and “who the program was built by, with, without, and for.”

Hockey is, of course, “inequitable” because it requires equipment to play and ice time to improve. Some people may not be able to afford the price or time needed to play, therefore no one can be allowed to play. This is the backward logic that comes with a commitment to “inclusion” and so-called equity.

Ice hockey is the national winter sport of Canada, yet Mount Royal has decided to bar regular students from playing it as an intramural sport. But the university still has an official ice hockey team, which is far less “inclusive” for normal students. Where is the “equity” in that?

This is what social justice always looks like in practice. Normal students lose the opportunity to play and are told it’s because their sport is not inclusive enough, but the elites, in this case the official university team, still get to enjoy it. Equity and inclusion are only for you, the peasants. The elites get to play by their own rules.
