UAlberta remembers community victims of Flight PS 752

The University of Alberta (UAlberta) payed tribute Sunday to the victims of the Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 that killed 176 people In Iran.

The university says the flight that was downed on Jan. 8, 2020 had 10 members of their community and three members of their families.

UAlberta took to Twitter to light a candle for the lost members.

“January 8 marks three years since the tragic downing of Flight PS752,” said UAlberta in a tweet. “We honour those who lost their lives, those whose lives they touched and the inspiring legacy they leave behind.”

UAlberta had made a memorial fund to keep their lost members’ legacies alive.

“The university established the Mojgan Daneshmand, Pedram Mousavi & Victims Of Flight PS752 Memorial Fund to enable future graduate students to fulfill their aspirations and uphold the legacy of the individuals honoured by this memorial fund,” read the university’s website.

The university unveiled The PS752 Memorial in a community event in May 3, 2022. It’s decorated with a bench, plaque, and weeping spruce tree to help honour and remember the victims.

UAlberta says people are welcome to visit the memorial located at Rutherford Quad on North Campus.

Meanwhile, 12 Canadian cities across the country held emotional events on Sunday, where family members who lost loved ones in the crash sobbed and called for justice.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau followed suit and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to seeking justice for the victims, as he joined Canadians across the country in marking three years since the Iranian military shot the plane down.

“This tragedy happened because of the Iranian regime’s heinous disregard for human life,” Trudeau said in remarks directed to grieving relatives.

“Your grief has been compounded by their refusal to be held accountable.”

Canada joined peer countries on Dec. 28 in starting the process to send the Flight PS752 case to the International Court of Justice, and attempting to force Iran to compensate victims’ families. But advocates argue the move should have come sooner.

The Ukraine International Airlines jetliner was bound for Canada via Ukraine and shot down shortly after its takeoff from Tehran.
