Shane Farkas plays for Mount Royal University in Calgary

A Penticton-born netminder and Okanagan Hockey Academy product has been recognized nationally for his efforts at Mount Royal University in Calgary.

Shane Farkas, 24, was named the Canada West Athlete of the Week for men’s hockey on Jan. 16.

The second-year student-athlete recorded two shutouts over the weekend against the Manitoba Bisons, making a combined 39 saves in a pair of starts.

Farkas played parts of three seasons with OHA from 2013 to 2016, before suiting up for the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL in 2016-2017. He later went on to play for the Portland Winterhawks and Victoria Royals in the WHL.

In 15 starts this season, Farkas leads the Canada West conference with three shutouts while posting a 12-2 record. The South Okanagan product ranks third in save percentage (.915) and fourth in goals-against average (2.21).
