Calgary’s Bow Valley College has appointed a new president who’s promising to shepherd it through the challenges of a government review and economic stagnation.

Misheck Mwaba had been the college’s vice-president of academics since 2017 and succeeds Laura Jo Gunter.

The new president and CEO, whose roots are in Zambia, takes the school’s reins amid a provincial review of Alberta’s post-secondary sector that seeks to make it more receptive to a changing workplace.

“There are many uncertainties coming from the ongoing post-secondary review and the economic challenges facing our province,” said Mwaba in a video.

“We are always looking for opportunities to innovate and grow. . . Bow Valley College will continue to be a beacon for Calgary, Albertans and all Canadians.”

A report from the review, which was launched last June, is expected to go to government by the end of the year.

The new president also assumes his role at a time when Alberta’s post-secondary institutions have faced provincial budget cuts.

Earlier this year, Bow  Valley College closed its Canmore campus as it sought to streamline its operations and better meet its educational mandate.

Mwaba has teaching and administrative experience at the University of Zambia, Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, Algonquin College, the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

As an engineer, he served with the Atomic Energy of Canada to boost the safety of Candu nuclear reactors and his research has been published in various peer-reviewed journals. Currently, he sits on the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada which funds scientific innovation.
