The pilot and flight training capacity at Mount Royal University is set to be doubled courtesy of a federal investment.

The Government of Canada is investing $3 million, via PrairiesCan, into the post-secondary’s pilot and aviation flight training program. The funding will help to double enrollment to 80 students per year in Mount Royal University’s Aviation Diploma program.

Additionally, it will help in launching a new Bachelor of Aviation Management degree program in 2024.

The investment will assist in equipping a new hangar and learning facility at the university’s Springbank campus, including new virtual reality technology and flight simulators.

Minister for PrairiesCan, Dan Vandal said, “Calgary’s post-secondary institutions are playing an essential role in supporting the growth of Alberta’s aviation sector.”

Vandal added, “Our government’s investment towards expanding Mount Royal University’s pilot training facility will help prepare a new generation of aviation professionals to drive the continued growth of Alberta’s aviation industry and the high-quality jobs that it creates for people and communities across the province.”

Officials said that over the next two years, the investment is anticipated to create over 70 jobs, assist 10 small-to-medium-sized businesses, and train 140 students.
