CAMPUS ROUNDUP: Dinos, Cougars teams earn home playoff games

The University of Calgary Dinos men’s hockey team wrapped up a historic regular season by extending its Canada West record win streak to 23 games.

Arjun Atwal had two goals, and Josh Maser, Marty Westhaver, Colson Gengenbach and Noah King also scored as the Dinos (25-3) defeated the visiting MacEwan Griffins 6-3 at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday. Carl Stankowski made 16 saves for the win.

The Dinos, who had clinched the regular-season title, earned one of two first-round playoff byes. They will host a best-of-three semifinal series Feb. 23-25.

The Mount Royal University Cougars men’s hockey team will also start their playoffs at home.

Nolan Yaremko scored four goals and Connor Bouchard had a goal and five assists as the Cougars finished their regular season with an 8-1 rout of the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon on Saturday. Riley Sawchuk added four helpers, and Josh Tarzwell, Koby Morrisseau and Spencer Moe also scored for MRU. Shane Farkas stopped 25-of-26 shots before Jackson Berry came on in the third period and turned aside all four shots he faced.

The Cougars (19-5-4) finished fourth and will host the fifth-place Huskies (14-10-4) in a best-of-three quarterfinal series this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at Flames Community Arenas. All games will start at 2 p.m.

Third-seeded UBC will host No. 6 Saskatchewan in the other quarterfinal, while Alberta earned the other first-round bye.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Cougars wrapped up their regular season by dropping a 3-1 decision to Saskatchewan at FCA on Saturday.

Aliya Jomha scored and Scout Anderson made 14 saves for MRU.

The Cougars (19-6-3) finished third and clinched a home quarterfinal series. They will open the playoffs by hosting the sixth-seeded Trinity Western Spartans (11-13-4) this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at FCA. All games will start at 7 p.m.

The Dinos have also earned a home quarterfinal series as the fourth seed.

Calgary closed out its regular season with a 3-1 win over host MacEwan in Edmonton on Saturday. Alli Borrow, Emma Tait and Sophia Zuck scored for the Dinos, and Amelia Awad made 22 saves in the win.

The Dinos (15-9-4) will host fifth-seeded Saskatchewan (14-11-3) in a quarterfinal series this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at FDB. Friday’s game starts at 7 p.m.; the other two would begin at 6 p.m.

UBC and Alberta earned the first-round byes.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Dinos clinched a top-four spot in the playoffs with an 87-57 win over the visiting Cougars to sweep their two-game Crowchild Classic series at the Jack Simpson Gym on Saturday as the regular season drew to a close.

Madison Landry led Calgary with 16 points, while Mya Proctor added 15 Annacy Palmer had 12.

Tanis Metcalfe paced MRU with 13 points.

The third-seeded Dinos (13-7) will host a quarterfinal on Saturday (1 p.m.) against the winner of the play-in game on Friday (1 p.m.) at the Jack between the 11th-seeded Cougars (11-9) and No. 6 Winnipeg Wesmen (15-5).

A total of 12 teams made the playoffs, with the top four earning a home quarterfinal. Playoff rankings are based on RPI (rating percentage index), which factors in win-loss records and strength of schedule.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Dinos edged the visiting Cougars 96-93 in overtime on Saturday to conclude the regular season and complete a sweep of their Crowchild Classic series.

Mason Foreman led Calgary with 26 points, Ezeoha Santiago added 19, Spencer Roberts had 17 and Manyang Tong chipped in with 12.

Ijah Nelson and Mawien Mawien paced MRU with 24 points apiece, while Thomas Teshome added 13 and Holt Tomie had 11.

The 10th-seeded Dinos (11-9) will take on No. 7 Trinity Western (12-8) in a play-in game on Friday in Winnipeg. The winner will face host and second-seeded Manitoba (18-2) in a quarterfinal the next day.

The 12th-seeded Cougars (8-12) will take on No. 5 UBC (13-7) in a play-in game on Friday in Edmonton. The winner will face fourth-seeded Alberta (15-5) in a quarterfinal the next day.
