Three original members of the team highlight a group of eleven returning to the Cavalry.
The Canadian Premier League squad announced the securement of eleven players for the 2022 campaign, a group that includes three members of the original roster in 2019 in goalkeeper Marco Carducci, attacking midfielder Sergio Camargo and holding midfielder Elijah Adekugbe.
“We are delighted to confirm the high number of quality returnees for the 2022 season,” said Cavalry FC head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. in a team release. “Having experienced a higher than normal turnover of players in the 2021 season, we wanted to continue to build the chemistry and depth required to be successful in this league.
“This group, including guys that have been here since day one, have quality and character that give us a great platform to build on as we finalize our other ongoing negotiations.”
Also re-upped with the team is goalkeeper Tyson Farago, left back Tom Field, centre back David Norman Jr,. central midfielders Elliot Simmons, Joe Di Chiara as well as strikers Joe Mason and Anthony Novak.
Key departures during the off-season have included Mohamed Farsi, the league’s U21 Canadian Player of the Year in the 2020 campaign, along with fan-favourite and three-year member of the squad Oliver Minatel, wingers Richard Luca and Ahinga Selemani as well as centre-back Karifa Yoa who is back with his parent club in the MLS, CF Montreal.
Last week, the Cavalry added to its young base with a pair of selections in the 2022 CPL U SPORTS Draft on Jan. 20.
With the sixth and 14thpicks, respectively, the team drafted Mount Royal University centre back Caden Rogozinski as well as UBC Thunderbirds midfielder Markus Kaiser.
The latter is the second member of his family to join the Cavalry ranks with his older brother Daniel Kaiser selected in the 2021 draft.
For the 2022 season, the Cavalry will look to take the next step into an elusive championship as one of the top contending teams over its three seasons since the league’s inception.
In 2021, the Cavs were knocked out in the semifinal round by the eventual league champion Pacific FC in a controversial finish at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field in November. The team made the league finals in 2019.
