The holiday recruiting season got a bit more joyful for the RDC Kings last week.

Kings volleyball announced after Christmas two recruits that will join the team in the 2019-20 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season.

Pat Toze, an outside hitter from Australia who most recently played at Mount Royal University, will join the Kings for the fall semester and is expected to play a big role after the departure of fifth-year Regan Fathers.

“Another Aussie, he’s a super dynamic guy. Had some shoulder issues at MRU so he’s back home getting those figured out,” Kings head coach Aaron Schulha said.

“He’s going to be really good. He can play some left side and some right side. He reminds me a little bit of Regan, not quite as tall, about 6’4”. But dynamic, quick arm and all those things. Try and bridge that gap with losing Regan.”

In 2015-16, Toze, playing for the College of the Rockies Avalanche, was the Pacific Western Athletic Association Rookie of the Year.

Carter Hills is the other talented Fall 2019 get for Schulha and the Kings head coach is excited to bolster his group next year.

“He can play both sides as well as a lefty. Can pass well and has a different look from the left side which I like. Can also play right side with pretty high quality,” Schulha said.

“He’s an efficient player and has been with the youth national program and been with the provincial program. They add a different dynamic and look. Nice to have a lefty on the outside. Good additions for us for sure.”

On the ice, the RDC Queens also upgraded for next season, signing forward Carissa Hogan from the Swift Current Wildcats. This season in 16 games she has four goals and eight assists.

Meanwhile, Kings hockey got busy with an upgrade for the second half of the ACAC season. They picked up forward Matt Lapointe, 22, of Edmonton, who previously played at the University of Moncton. In 27 games last year at the U Sports level, the left winger had one assist.

Kings and Queens volleyball tip off the 2019 portion of the ACAC season at Ambrose against the Lions on Jan. 4. On Jan 11, Queens hockey will take on the MacEwan University Griffins and the Kings will travel to NAIT to play the Ooks. RDC sits first in the ACAC Men’s Hockey standings with a 10-2-1-1 record.
