KASEY HIEMSTRA MAKES U SPORTS COMMITMENT TO MOUNT ROYAL UNIVERSITY

The Blackfalds Bulldogs are proud to announce that Kasey Hiemstra has committed to playing U Sports hockey at MRU (Mount Royal University) for the 2023-24 season. Hiemstra, 21, played 167 total AJHL games between 2019 and 2023 with the Drumheller Dragons, Olds Grizzlys, and Blackfalds Bulldogs, posting 92 points in his career.

“I feel MRU is a great spot for me to succeed and develop in my hockey career. They are a well-respected team and great hockey program,” said Hiemstra. “MRU is in a great location and it’ll feel like I’m at home when I’m there. I’m very excited to see what the year will bring!”

Hiemstra was traded from Olds to Blackfalds in November 2022 and posted 11 goals and 27 points in a total of 49 games in the regular season and the playoffs with the Bulldogs. Hiemstra excelled in the playoffs, posting five points in four games during the first round and a total of 11 points during Blackfalds’ run to the South division final. Hiemstra says he and MRU had been in contact since the spring, but that the discussions continued and ultimately the offer came through in August.

“We are extremely excited that Kasey is getting the opportunity to play at the U Sports level now this season,” said Bulldogs Director of Hockey Operations Al Parada. “He is a player who has worked hard for this opportunity and has the skating ability to play at this level and be successful.”

“I would like to thank my family for continuously supporting me through the highs and lows. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them! My coaches, trainers, and past & present teammates for helping me develop into the player I have become,” said Hiemstra. “As well, I’d like to thank all my billets for providing me with lifelong relationships and allowing me to feel at home.”

Hiemstra went on to say he’s going to be taking open studies in his first year at MRU but will likely pursue a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education degree.

Hiemstra joins Brett Meerman, Jason Siedem, Connor Dick, Layne Loomer, Tanner Willick, Brendan Ross, Otto Hanson, and Matthew Hennessey now becoming the ninth member of the 2022-23 Blackfalds Bulldogs to earn a commitment to play hockey at a post-secondary institution for the 2023-24 season.

The entire Bulldogs organization would like to congratulate Kasey and his family on his commitment and wish him the best of luck at MRU!
