Considered one of the great wrestling stars of the 1990s, Canadian legend Bret “The Hitman” Hart debuted in 1978 but retired prematurely in 2000 due to a nasty concussion he suffered in the ring. Save for a brief stint wrestling in multi-man matches for WWE in 2010, Hart has stayed out of the ring and pursued other interests while still keeping in the public eye.

Now that he’s no longer on the road for wrestling commitments, Bret Hart has been up to a lot, so here are some of the Hitman’s comings and goings that may have flown under your radar.

10 Wrote for the Calgary Sun

Like any pro wrestler with a modicum of fame and a storied career, Bret Hart wrote an autobiography. That’s just safe to assume, but what’s more interesting is that Hart wrote a regular column for the daily Canadian tabloid the Calgary Sun until about 2004.

If you take a look at the columns that have been posted online, you’ll find a lot of Hart’s pet themes: hockey, reminiscing about wrestling and making fun of Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels.

9 Received an Honorary Degree

Here’s a fun fact about Bret Hart: in the late 1970s he attended Calgary’s Mount Royal University for filmmaking but dropped out after a semester and decided to spend a few years working in the family business of pro wrestling.

A few years turned into a few decades, and in 2018, Hart received an honorary degree -- the Bachelor of Health and Physical Education - Physical Literacy -- from his alma mater. He wore a cap and gown and everything!

8 Clowned on Kim Kardashian

Besides his leather jacket, one of the most iconic pieces of Bret Hart’s look is that weird reflective visor he’d wear in his entrance and give to some kid on his way to the ring. He even sells them online.

It’s almost guaranteed that uber-celebrity Kim Kardashian has no idea who Bret Hart is, but one time she wore a pair of shades that looked suspiciously like Hart’s. So the Hitman did what everyone on Twitter does when they notice a celebrity fit resembles an unrelated pop culture figure: clowned on her.

7 Got An Honorary Name

In retirement, Bret Hart has received loads of accolades and honors for his career. In 2018, Hart received an honorary name -- “Iyiikitapinna,” which translates to “Courageous Chief” -- in a naming ceremony held by the Blackfoot indigenous tribe.

Hart called it a great honor, considering at one point the tribe planned a ceremony for his father Stu. Bret Hart’s quote about the name itself is extremely funny, by the way: “I think it’s a great name. It might be too bold a name for me, but it tops Hitman anyway.”

6 Made a Movie with Corey Feldman

One thing about Bret Hart that doesn’t get a lot of attention is his acting. Fans may remember his Simpsons cameo, but may not know he was on multiple episodes of Lonesome Dove: The Series and its follow up Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years.

He also starred in a horror film called Tales from the Dead Zone -- an anthology feature in the vein of Creepshow -- alongside Corey Feldman.

5 Started a Small Business Lender

Sharpshooter Funding is a Canadian company that offers small business loans for people looking to start businesses. If you check out their website, you’ll notice a vaguely Hitman theme, with all the pink and the maple leaf in its logo.

Turns out the business was co-founded by Bret Hart, who also works as a spokesperson for the company. An interesting move, for sure, considering other wrestlers just slap their name on a substandard product.

4 Hurt Seth Rollins’ Feelings

While he may be retired, Bret Hart is an extremely outspoken, opinionated figure in pro wrestling, so much that he tends to ruffle feathers. In 2015 he commented on that time Seth Rollins broke John Cena’s nose on Raw, calling Rollins “unprofessional” and “reckless” in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

The following year, Rollins would open up about it on Chris Jericho’s podcast, Talk is Jericho, saying that Hart’s comments on the Cena incident legitimately wounded him, as he grew up idolizing the Hitman. Hart would later apologize.

3 Played the Genie in Aladdin

It’s already established that Bret Hart’s done a bit of acting over the years, but this is even more amusing. In the mid-2000s, Hart portrayed the Genie in a local Calgary musical production of Aladdin.

The role was specifically written for him, so Hart ended up sort of reprising his wrestling persona in a performance he felt was more like what he used to do in the ring than the onscreen work he’d done, as he got an immediate audience reaction. Maybe more wrestlers should try theatre.

2 Was Honored by a Porn Parody

You know a thing is somewhere in the vicinity of “cultural institution” (or at least “vaguely recognizable brand”) if someone decides to do an adult film parody of it. And in 2017, porn production company Brazzers shot a wrestling themed flick.

They also decided to be (appropriately) on the nose by focusing on the Montreal Screwjob, for obvious reasons. The title of the parody is unprintable, and there’s no word whether Bret Hart knows about it.

1 Was Also Honored by a Beer

It’s hard to imagine an honor greater than having a craft beer brewed in your name, and a couple of years ago, Calgary’s very own Village Brewery debuted a citrus hibiscus ale called Hitman, with pink on the label and everything.

It’s not the first time a wrestler has been associated with beer, however -- Stone Cold Steve Austin has an IPA through El Segundo, and according to the users of Beer Advocate, Austin’s beer has an average score of 3.94 while Hart’s has a 3.61. The feud continues.
