Dinos to host Cougars as Crowchild Classic men's hockey playoff showdown set

The Crowchild Classic is returning with a spot in the Canada West men’s hockey championship series on the line.

The Mount Royal University Cougars set up the clash with the University of Calgary Dinos by sweeping the MacEwan Griffins in their best-of-three quarterfinal series on Saturday night.

Jaden Senkoe scored twice, and Kyle Walker, Remy Aquilon, Robbie Holmes and Robbie Fromm-Delorme also tallied as third-seed MRU won 6-4 in Game 2 at Flames Community Arenas. Riley Sims made 20 saves.

Sam Simard, Kadyn Chabot, Vincent Scott and Kole Gable replied for No. 6 MacEwan. Ashton Abel turned aside 31 shots.

The Dinos, who earned a bye into the semifinals as the second seed, will host the Cougars in a best-of-three at Father David Bauer Arena. All games in the series — Thursday, Friday and Saturday (if necessary) — are 7 p.m. starts.

In the other semifinal, top-seeded UBC will host the winner of the Saskatchewan-Alberta quarterfinal, which will be decided in a Game 3 in Saskatoon on Sunday.

MRU women advance

The defending national champion MRU women’s hockey team is also through to the semifinals after sweeping the visiting Manitoba Bisons.

Aliya Jomha, Emma Bergesen, Julia Duke, Sydney Benko and Athena Hauck scored as the third-seeded Cougars won 5-1 in Game 2 of their quarterfinal on Saturday. Kaitlyn Ross made 27 saves.

Brenna Nicol tallied for sixth-seeded Manitoba and Emily Shippam turned aside 26 shots.

The Cougars will face the No. 2 Alberta Pandas in their semifinal in Edmonton. Games are set for Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.

U of C women force decider

The fifth-seeded Dinos women’s hockey team defeated the host and No. 4 Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0 on Saturday to force a deciding Game 3.

Gabriella Durante made 28 saves for the shutout, while Sydney Mercier and Brooklin Fry scored.

Game 3 in Saskatoon is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

The winner will face top-seeded and host UBC in the semifinals.
