Canada West hockey and basketball playoffs begin on Friday — and there’s no shortage of action taking place in Calgary.

Both the University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal University Cougars are hosting games this weekend.

The action tips off at 1 p.m. on Friday, when the 11th-seeded MRU women’s basketball team faces the No. 6 Winnipeg Wesmen in a play-in game at the Dinos’ Jack Simpson Gym.

The winner will play host and third-seeded Calgary on Saturday (1 p.m.) in a quarterfinal at the Jack.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Both the Dinos and Cougars have play-in games on the road Friday.

No. 10 Calgary faces the seventh-seeded Trinity Western Spartans in Winnipeg (6 p.m. MT), with the winner to play the host and No. 2 Manitoba Bisons in a quarterfinal on Saturday.

No. 12 MRU faces the fifth-seeded UBC Thunderbirds in Edmonton (2 p.m.), with the winner to play the host and No. 4 Alberta Golden Bears in a quarterfinal on Saturday.

MEN’S HOCKEY

The fourth-seeded Cougars are hosting the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies in a best-of-three quarterfinal series with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at Flames Community Arenas. The puck drops at 2 p.m. for each game.

The top-seeded Dinos, who are riding a CW-record 23-game win streak, have a bye this weekend. They will host the lower remaining seed after the two conference quarterfinals in a best-of-three semifinal series Feb. 24-26.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

No. 3 MRU hosts the sixth-seeded Trinity Western Spartans in a best-of-three quarterfinal series with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at FCA. All games are set to start at 7 p.m.

No. 4 Calgary hosts fifth-seeded Saskatchewan in their quarterfinal with games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (if necessary) at Father David Bauer Arena. Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. with the other two starting at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Playoff spots and positions are on the line as the regular season wraps up this weekend.

The second-place Cougars (17-5) face the host MacEwan Griffins (4-18) in Edmonton on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (5:30 p.m.). After sweeping the Brandon Bobcats last weekend, MRU is ranked third in the country.

The seventh-place Dinos (12-10) host sixth-place Manitoba (13-9) as they look to secure a top-eight finish and playoff spot. Friday’s match starts at 7:45 p.m.; Saturday’s at 5 p.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Seventh-place Calgary (10-12) hosts eighth-place Manitoba (9-13) at the Jack with both teams looking to secure a top-eight finish and playoff spot. Friday’s match starts at 6 p.m., Saturday’s at 6:45 p.m.

Second-place MRU (17-5) faces MacEwan (4-18) in Edmonton on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (4 p.m.). After sweeping Brandon last weekend, the Cougars are ranked fourth in the country.
