New honour for Hayley Wickenheiser: U of C announces honorary degree recipients

The University of Calgary revealed the list of extraordinary people who will receive honorary degrees at its June convocation ceremonies this year.

The list includes:

  • Hayley Wickenheiser: A five-time Olympic medallist in women’s hockey; she gives back to the community through dozens of charitable athletic and youth organizations.
  • Marie Delorme: The CEO of the Imagination Group of Companies; she’s also an advocate for Indigenous women’s leadership and youth at risk.
  • Harvey Locke: He is a leading conservationist, writer and photographer in the area of parks, wilderness and large landscape conservation.
  • Stephanie Nolen: The bureau chief for the Globe and Mail Latin American office; she has reported from more than 75 countries.
  • David Pierce: Known locally for developing the Calgary Stampede Evening Grandstand Show; he has won an Emmy and produces entertainment shows across the continent.
  • P. Kim Sturgess: As founder and CEO of Alberta WaterSmart, Sturgess has improved water management through improved practices and technologies.
  • Brian Jackson: He’s been a middle school teacher for 27 years, and during that time, has become a leader in science education, focusing on a “hands-on, minds-on” approach to teaching.
  • Peter Doherty: The only person with a veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize, he shared the award in physiology/medicine for discoveries related to how the immune system recognizes infected cells.

The honorary degree these recipients will receive, a doctor of laws, is given out based on leadership, community service and excellence achieved in one’s field.
