Cochrane Mounties have arrested a man wanted for what city police are calling a random and unprovoked assault at a Calgary university.

RCMP officers arrested Calgarian Cory Carl Szabo, 38, in Cochrane on the weekend and the suspect is being held in custody.

On Feb. 18 at about 7 p.m., city police say Szabo was confronted by an employee at St. Mary’s University who asked why he was there.

Szabo told the employee he was there for a meeting and then left the building, only to re-enter it after a staffer had opened a door.

Once inside, the suspect attacked the employee, pushing him to the floor before punching and kicking him.

The man then fled, leaving his victim with cuts to his face and elbow, and bruising to his back.

Surveillance footage subsequently suggested the same suspect was responsible for a tire slashing in the university’s parking lot on Feb. 13.

Police don’t believe the suspect is linked to another random assault in nearby Fish Creek Park on Feb. 15, during which a man in his 50s was attacked from behind and had personal items stolen. It’s also not known if the suspect was involved in a Feb. 15 assault of a teen in a Braeside off-leash dog park, say Calgary police.

Szabo has been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection to the St. Mary’s incident and is to appear in court on Tuesday.
