CALGARY (660 News) – Calgary’s population continues to grow, but there are some troubling signs.
The release of census numbers for the city was delayed this year because poor weather in the spring meant staff had trouble getting door to door.
The census data was gathered both online as well as on tablets via door-to-door collection. 204,229 household submitted their data through the self-serve system while 188,633 did in 2018.
That’s an increase of three per cent.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says Calgary has grown by 18,367 to more than 1.28 million.

One thing that is raising alarm bells is the hollowing out of the more established communities, and the rapid growth on the fringes.
“Communities along the edges like Mahogany, Legacy, Nolan hill, Cornerstone, and Redstone are growing very very rapidly and indeed those are the largest population increases this year,” said Nenshi. “Years past we’ve seen neighbourhoods like the Beltline growing very significantly.”

The other troubling stat is a drop in the birth rate because fewer people in their 30’s are having kids.
Nenshi says to maintain a healthy city and workforce, immigration is needed.
