Lalor, Campbell named Thurber Athletes of the Year

The Lindsay Thurber Raiders celebrated another big year at their annual Athletic Awards Banquet Wednesday night.

Senior Jamie Lalor was named the Female Athlete of the Year.

During her time at Thurber, Jamie was looked upon to run the offenses both on her volleyball and basketball teams. She was also a provincial level track athlete competing in the 200m sprint, 300m hurdles, Javelin and the 4x400m relay.

“One of my favorite memories here was going back-to-back as provincial champions in volleyball, it was an amazing experience to share with my teammates,” Lalor said. “I will miss the family atmosphere here at the school, my coaches and the friendships I have made.”

It is the end of an era in the Raiders Athletics program as Jamie is the last of the Lalor girls to graduate from Lindsay Thurber. Jamie will be attending Mount Royal University where she will be playing basketball for the Cougars.

Other nominees for Female Athlete of the Year were Natalie Vega, Edyn Aasman, Hanna Wirtanen, Kira Weddell and Chenee Lehman.

Football and cross-country running star Josh Campbell won Male Athlete of the Year honours.

When asked about his favorite memories as a Raider, Campbell replied, “It would probably have to be this last football season when we took on the Harry Ainlay Titans in the Tier 1 North Final.”

Campbell added, “I have to give props to Will Moir and Martin Leroy (who were also nominees), Will was one of my primary targets and Martin kicked some clutch field goals for us over the course of the season.”

Next year, Campbell plans on attending McGill University this fall.

Other nominees for Male Athlete of the Year were Will Moir, Jacob Hicks, Martin Leroy and Selemani Nshimiyimana.

This year’s Curtis McKee Award winner was Levi Heinrichs.

The Grade 9 Female Athlete of the Year was Ella Damberger, who competed on the CWAJHAA champion cross-country team where she earned MVP honours. She also competed on the handball team, soccer, and track and field teams. The other nominees were Sophie Kay, Lauren Domoney, Avery Hansen, Megan James, McKayla Janzen and Kristen Campbell.

Luke Weddell and Kage Hansen shared the Grade 9 Male Athlete of the Year honour. Both were vital in the volleyball and basketball teams this past year. Other athletes in the running were Coen Good, Harris Khan, Thomas Chauvet.
