CAMPUS ROUNDUP: Dinos advance to Canada West men's hockey final

The University of Calgary Dinos have advanced to the Canada West men’s hockey championship series after defeating the visiting Saskatchewan Huskies 6-1 in a deciding game at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night.

The top-seeded Dinos completed a comeback after dropping the first game of the best-of-three semifinal to No. 5 Saskatchewan 5-3 on Thursday. Calgary levelled the series with a 4-2 win on Friday.

On Saturday, Max Patterson and Josh Maser scored two goals apiece for the Dinos while Connor Gutenberg and Zach Wytinck added singles. Carl Tetachuk made 17 saves for the win.

The Dinos were also forced to rally in Game 3 after Vince Loschiavo gave the Huskies the lead just over a minute into the contest. Roddy Ross turned aside 18 shots for the visitor.

Calgary will host No. 2 Alberta or No. 3 UBC in a best-of-three final starting Friday. The Alberta-UBC semifinal will be decided in a Game 3 showdown on Sunday.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The Mount Royal University Cougars will play a deciding contest after falling 1-0 to the host Alberta Pandas in Game 2 of their best-of-three semifinal on Saturday.

Kaitlyn Ross made 15 saves for the third-seeded Cougars. Halle Oswald turned aside 16 shots and Abby Soyko scored the winner midway through the first period for the No. 2 Pandas at Clare Drake Arena.

MRU took the series opener 2-0 on Friday. Game 3 is Sunday (2 p.m.), with the winner advancing to face No. 1 UBC or No. 5 Saskatchewan in a best-of-three conference final. The UBC-Saskatchewan series will also be decided in a Game 3 on Sunday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The host Cougars completed a two-match quarterfinal sweep of the Dinos with a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21) at Kenyon Court on Saturday night.

Haley Roe had 18 kills and Quinn Pelland recorded 45 assists for second-seeded MRU. Daisy Olsen responded with 14 kills, while Stella Rains had 29 assists for No. 7 Calgary.

The Cougars, who took the first match 3-0 on Friday, advance to a best-of-three semifinal set to begin next Friday. They will host No. 6 Manitoba, which swept No. 3 UBC in their quarterfinal.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Dinos rallied to complete a two-match quarterfinal sweep of the host Cougars with a 3-2 win (22-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-10 at Kenyon Court on Saturday night.

Louis Kunstmann had 21 kills and Zack Durrant recorded 47 assists for seventh-seeded Calgary. Max Haronga replied with 17 kills and Jackson Brennan added 47 assists for No. 7 MRU.

The Dinos, who took the first match 3-0 on Friday, move on to a best-of-three semifinal against host and third-seeded Trinity Western, which swept No. 6 Brandon in their quarterfinal.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Dinos will host the Alberta Pandas in the CW championship game at the Jack Simpson Gym next weekend.

After third-seeded Calgary defeated No. 2 Regina 71-62 in their semifinal on Friday, the Dinos were waiting to find out their opponent. That was decided when the No. 4 Pandas upset top-seeded and host Saskatchewan 69-57 on Saturday.

The Dinos will host the final — for which a date and time had yet to be announced — based on their higher seed.

Both teams have also clinched the two automatic CW qualification spots in the U SPORTS national tournament in Sydney, N.S., from March 9-12.
