MOUNT ROYAL UNIVERSITY
Beakerhead founder Mary Anne Moser receives honorary doctorate from MRU

November 5, 2019

Mount Royal University awarded Beakerhead co-founder Mary Anne Moser an Honorary Doctor of Laws on November 1st. Currently the president and chief executive officer of TELUS Spark, Moser helped co-found Beakerhead in 2012, an international first for Calgary bringing people together at the crossroads of art, science and engineering.

"The Canadian science community owes a lot to Mary Anne for bringing the wonder of science and art collaborations to the public," said Jonathan Withey, DPhil., Dean of Science and Technology at Mount Royal. "As an individual, she has worked tirelessly to advance science - in how it is communicated, learned, advanced and sought as a profession among women. I cannot think of a more worthy recipient."

An honorary doctorate is the highest symbol of recognition that Mount Royal can give to an individual. As part of Convocation celebrations, Moser will address this year's graduates and guests. Mount Royal has 320 students graduating this fall, with close to 200 returning to campus for Friday's Convocation.

"I have a lot of respect for the MRU faculty members and graduates that I have gotten to know over the years," said Moser. "I have strong science communication allies with MRU faculty in particular, so this award means a lot to me. Communicating science, like teaching science, is a very different skill than doing science. And MRU people have played clear and visible roles in building capacity in Calgary for engaging science in mainstream culture."
