Companies really seem to thrive in Alberta, so it’s hardly a surprise that the province is on the radar of an e-commerce giant. With 2 facilities in Edmonton and one in Balzac, Amazon has announced that they have pledged $4.3 billion to build Canada’s second cloud computing hub in Calgary which would be the largest investment in provincial history.
“Calgary continues to build momentum as one of the top destinations in Canada for tech and innovation companies,” said Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in a statement.
“Our high quality of life, low cost of doing business, and expanding tech talent base are putting Calgary on the map for companies wanting to expand or relocate.”

The mayor also mentioned that this would create some incredible opportunities for those in the area. In fact, they predict that over 950 full-time jobs will come of this, though it is worth noting that these positions may not be filled until 2037, according to Jobs, Economy, and Innovation Minister, Doug Schweitzer.
For those who are unfamiliar, AWS is described as being the world’s most broadly adopted ‘cloud’ offering and will give more startups and enterprises, nonprofit organizations, and developers a chance to run applications from Canada. Of course, to do this, those filling these jobs will need special training – but they’ve got that covered!
AWS has announced that they’ll be partnering with Mount Royal University to offer candidates free training. These courses will prepare people for entry-level positions and give them an opportunity to work their way up with more experience.
If all goes to plan, the AWS Canada West Calgary Region Hub can be expected to open as early as late 2023 or early 2024 – so get working on your resumes, Calgary, they’ll be hiring before you know it.
