The family of Dayna Brons has confirmed that the Humboldt Broncos athletic therapist, who previously served as the athletic therapist for the men’s soccer team at Mount Royal University, has passed away following Friday’s crash in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority released the following statement on behalf of Dayna Brons’ family on Wednesday afternoon:
The family of Dayna Brons would like to share that Dayna passed away peacefully this afternoon as a result of her injuries. She was surrounded by those she loved and those who loved her. Dayna will be forever remembered for her joyful smile, and her passion and love of sport. She was the Athletic Therapist for the Humboldt Broncos and was extremely proud to be part of the Broncos family.
Dayna’s family would like to thank the first responders, emergency staff, and all those who have cared for Dayna over these last few days for their support. And, they would like to thank everyone across Saskatchewan and Canada for their love and prayers during this very difficult time.
The 24-year-old woman who was originally from Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan suffered serious head trauma as a result of the April 6 crash. In hospital, Brons was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent two surgeries.
David Legg, Chair of the Department of Health and Physical Education at Mount Royal University, confirms Barons completed her advanced certificate in athletic therapy in 2016.
"During Dayna's time at Mount Royal she was known by students, friends, classmates and faculty for her inspired mind, positive attitude, love for sport and big dreams," said Legg in a statement. "I cannot imagine the pain her parents and friends are experiencing in having those dreams cut short."
As of Wednesday afternoon, 16 lives have been lost to the fatal April 6 crash at the intersection Highway 35 and Highway 335 south of the town of Nipawin.
RCMP continue to investigate the collision.
