Wanham volleyball player to represent Canada this summer

A volleyball player from Wanham will be wearing the maple leaf and representing Canada this summer.

Volleyball Canada has picked Quinn Pelland for its 2023 Women’s NextGen team.

Pelland is one of 15 players from across Canada on the roster, five are from Alberta.

She is not the only Peace Region connection on the team. Beaverlodge product Gina Schmidt is one of the assistant coaches.

The NextGen team will start training Wednesday, May 24 in Richmond, BC.

They will host a team from California at the Richmond Olympic Oval for training and some exhibition matches.

They will also play at the U23 PanAm Cup in Mexico July 17 to 23 then head to the Dominican Republic for the Noreca Final 6 August 18 to 26

Pelland played U Sports volleyball with Calgary’s Mount Royal University.

The Cougars played at nationals this year and last year, winning the school’s first-ever medal, a silver, in 2022.

Pelland earned USports Player of the Week and First-Team All-Star selections during her university career.

Schmidt played NCAA volleyball with Oregon State before going on to a career with the senior national team. She also was the NextGen team head coach in 2021 and is currently the women’s volleyball coach at Simon Fraser University.
