Calgary wildfire evacuee reception centre closing

The wildfire evacuee reception centre in Calgary will close as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The city and Alberta Emergency Management Agency say the centre is “no longer required,” noting the number of evacuees is trending down and more of the fires are being brought under control.

Additionally, they say there are other communities across Alberta with “adequate resources and capacity to accommodate evacuees.”

The centre has been located at Mount Royal University since May 19. Prior to that, evacuees were checking in on the Calgary Stampede grounds.

The city says families currently receiving shelter through the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) will continue to receive support as the centre closes.

“I’m proud of our Emergency Social Services team at The City of Calgary,” said CEMA Acting Chief Coby Duerr. “Lending support to our neighbours in central and northern Alberta is the right thing to do.”

The city says as of May 8, 81 people were registered and offered support.

Wildfire evacuees who are in need of services can find more information online at alberta.ca/emergency or by phone at 310-4455.
