Final push for candidates, Calgarians vote Monday

There is just one weekend of campaigning left before Calgarians head to the polls for Monday’s municipal election.

Some races are all but settled, however there are also some close battles, especially when it comes to choosing the city’s next mayor.

Mount Royal University political scientist Lori Williams told CityNews Bill Smith needs to give more details if he hopes to win.

“He’s running for the job of managing an entire city and there are questions now about whether he could manage his law practice or his small business,” she said, adding he would benefit from getting specific on policy.

“The primary information out there is that there are questions about his ability and running against [Naheed] Nenshi is just not going to be enough to offset that,” explained Williams.

As for Naheed Nenshi, Williams said he needs to do what he does best and keep trying to connect with voters.

“Focus on the positives from him and not look like he’s going too negative because that’s not going to go well for anyone, particularly someone who has questions swirling around him about being too negative on occasions in the past,” said Williams.

Those could be the keys for any candidate in a close race: avoid things that will get them into trouble, highlight why they’re the best candidate, and focus on the record of their opponents.
