Expert says anger could be driving voters to polls

Strong turn-outs at advanced polls across the city point to a motivated voter-base according to a political expert.

Lori Williams, Political Scientist at Mount Royal University, told CityNews Calgarians appear to be emotionally engaged this time around.

“Generally speaking, anger tends to be a better motivator. We see people that are angry being more motivated to vote and others who are less passionate tend not to come out,” Williams said.

She adds recent accusations of racial bias, and bot-usage could also be spurring people to get to the polls to support their preferred candidate.

So far, nearly 45,000 people have cast a ballot in advanced polling with Tuesday and Wednesday still to go.

Election Day is next October 16.
